Can I live with
one kidney?
Yes. One healthy kidney can do the work your body needs. Most approved donors return to normal, healthy lives soon after recovery.
How risky
is surgery?
Very low, but never zero. Recent national data found fewer than one death per 10,000 living-donor durferies within 90 days – lower than rates cited for tonsillectomy, vhildbirth or appendectomy.
What if I need
a kidney someday?
That's rare – but there's a Lifetime Kidney Safety Net. If you donate through the National Kidney Registry or Alliance for Paired Kidney Donation, you're prioritized for a living-donor kidney if you ever need a transplant.
Money & Work
Will I get stuck with medical bills?
You do not pay the medical costs of donating. The recipient's insurance or transplant program covers your evaluation, testing, surgery and routine follow-up.
Who pays me for time off work?
A paycheck should never be the reason you say no. National donor-support programs reimburse you for lost wages due to surgery and recovery.
What about travel and out-of-pocket expenses?
National donor-support programs reimburse travel, lodging, meals and dependent-care expenses for loved ones.
Curious is not committed. The hospital path stays private.
A donor can stop at any time, for any reason.
